monumental 7's
national regional championship tournament
winner
CRC is the Collegiate Rugby Championship, run by National College Rugby (NCR). The tournament was founded in 2010 and has become the premier 7s competition in the US. 32 Men’s teams compete for the title. Last year’s champions, Kutztown, qualified through our Monumental 7s. The 2023 CRC’s will be played April 28-30 in Washington, DC and broadcasted on CBS Sports.
Monumental 7s is a Men’s Northeast Regional Qualifier for the CRC tournament, hosted by the New England Free Jacks. 16 teams will compete for a qualifying spot at the national championships. This is the second year of the tournament’s existence – Kutztown won in 2022 and went on to win the CRC’s. Monumental 7s is a one day (March 25th) event from 7am-3:30pm. After the tournament, participating teams are encouraged to stay for the Free Jack’s Home match v. Dallas Jackals. The seedings and schedule are attached below.
The Free Jack’s are providing a direct route to the highest level of collegiate 7s in the country. Last year’s winner, Kutztown, went on to win the National Championship! Monumental 7s is sure to present a day of incredible rugby and fun, as it leads right into the Flannel Disco festival.

Rugby is a full-contact, free flowing sport. The game is made up of 2 40-minute halves. A team wins by moving forward and scoring more points than the other team. Watch the video and check out the terms below.

MOVE FORWARD PASS BACK
In order to make your way down the field, the ball must be passed either sideways or backwards. The ball can only move forward if kicked or carried by a player.
NO PADS?!
Unlike American football, rugby players do not wear pads. This actually makes the game safer as it encourages proper tackle technique with arms and shoulders and not heads. Any contact to the head will be penalized with either a penalty, yellow or red card.
HOW TO SCORE POINTS
Players score by either physically touching the ball down in the “Try zone”, or scoring a penalty kick off of the other team’s infringement.
TRY
The main objective of the game; to touch the ball down in the opponent’s end-zone (Try-zone) area for a score worth 5 points. The ball must be touched down to the ground under control for the score to count!
CONVERSION
After scoring a try, a team will kick for an additional 2-points from the line that the try was touched down.
SCRUM
Used to restart play after a technical infringement. All 8 forwards join to compete for the ball.
LINEOUT
Used to restart play after the ball goes out of bounds. Forwards assemble in a straight line across from each other, where one team’s Hooker throws the ball down the middle. Each team uses various formations to lift players and compete for the ball.
KNOCK-ON
An infringement when a player loses, drops, or knocks the ball forward from their hands, resulting in a scrum to the other team.

wian conradie
The 6’1, 230lbs, Namibian loose forward from Windhoek takes this weeks spotlight.
Since day 1 arriving at the club, we have felt at home right away. My wife and I fell in love with Boston and we’re really grateful on how the club has welcomed us into the Free Jacks family. We are amazed and thankful by the growing amount of support for the Free Jacks and really hope that we can fill up veterans soon! We’re absolutely honored to represent such a professional club!
- Wian Conradie
Wian Conradie re-enters New England from Windhoek Namibia. The dynamic back row is well traveled and experienced having played for Doncaster Knights and Gloucester before returning to New England. Conradie was the 2021 Players Player Award for the Free Jacks. He is a member of the Namibian National Team and has earned 26 caps.
Conradie is an explosive and versatile ball carrying forward capable across the back row. A dominant openside flanker and No. 8, Conradie made his test debut for his home nation of Namibia at the age of 20 in 2015 against Kenya at Windhoek on August 8, 2015. He was one of four under 21-year-old players selected for the 2015 Rugby World Cup. Conradie was an integral member of the squad that helped Namibia qualify for the 2019 Rugby World Cup in Japan by winning the African Cup.
