The New England Free Jacks kicked off their 2025 season with a 24-17 victory over RFC Los Angeles at Wallis Annenberg Stadium. New England overcame early pressure to secure the win.

Jed Melvin set the tone with a crucial interception and try, converted by John Poland for a 7-0 lead. LA responded with a penalty goal and a try, edging ahead 10-7. A yellow card for LA’s Cronan Gleeson gave the Free Jacks an opening, and they capitalized with a penalty try, reclaiming the lead at 14-10 by halftime.

New England extended their advantage early in the second half as Paula Balekana crossed the line, making it 19-10. Wayne van der Bank’s try, coupled with his 27 tackles, earned him Player of the Match honors as the Free Jacks surged ahead 24-10. LA closed the gap with a late try, but New England’s defense held firm despite finishing the match with 13 men due to two cards.

The Free Jacks secured five points in the standings and now enjoy a bye before facing the Chicago Hounds on March 2. Their title defense is off to a strong start.
